Evan and I both grew up in the mountains and have recently been able to live amidst them and we both feel like we have come home. You can take the girl from the mountains but it seems as though you can’t take the love of the mountains from the girl. I am so thankful that we made the decision to farm hemp this past summer, as it has allowed us to enjoy the majestic San Juan Mountains more than we could have otherwise.
Some of you may know that we own and run a construction business in Texas, which has kept us busy enough in and of itself. So, “why jump into growing hemp?” you may ask. The answer to that is three fold:
- Evan was born into a ranching family in the Cimarron Valley of Colorado, where our Colorado home now sits. We have had a side hustle caring for livestock and marketing our grass fed beef through our company Twin Pines Beef for 5.5 years now. THIS is Evan’s passion and first love, getting back into the farming and ranching world and hopefully making some money in the process was something that excited him.
- My background in nursing and interest in holistic medicine made farming hemp for CBD an exciting endeavor for my medical mind.
- This one is simple, we wanted a reason to be in Colorado as more than merely vacationers.
This venture provided a perfect blend of both our passions and gave us an opportunity to teach our kids about the importance of stewardship and holistic processes.
So we jumped.
We decided in April we were on board and started getting things prepped in May. We have so many people who have helped us make this dream a reality!
We were so blessed to have our friends from Horn Family Farm welcome us to grow and harvest alongside them on their property. Thank you!
Our construction crew, you showed your skill and expertise on top of helping with the hemp itself. Thank you for being the trustworthy and skilled men you are. Carlos, you took on so much responsibility in this process. Thank you.
Cat, we could not have done this without you. Thank you for all the work and for processing all the things alongside us.
Gene and Gretchen, you have been an invaluable resource to us on this farming journey. Thank you not only for who you guys are and what that brings to the table but also for all you have done.
Build-a-Soil, thank you for all the knowledge and all the time spent holding our hands.
Jessica, Roby, Ty, Briley and I am sure I am missing some, thank you for all the hours you poured in!
Farming is not for the faint of heart but we enjoyed the process. Follow along in the next blog to hear more about the planting process!
